Nanocomposite Co-catalysts, based on smectite and biowaste-derived carbon, as peroxymonosulfate activators in degradation of tartrazine

Chitosan (Ch)-derived from biowaste along with smectite, an abundant clay mineral, were used in a low-cost and eco-friendly synthesis of new type catalyst. Nanocomposite catalysts constituted Co supported on smectite chitosan-derived carbon loading obtained using impregnation?carbonization procedure denoted as Co/cCh-S-T (T stands for applied carbonization temperature). The was performed the temperature range 400 °C to 700 flow N2 providing inert atmosphere. 500 found be most suitable catalyst regarding catalytic performance peroxymonosulfate activated degradation tartrazine. incorporation carbonized chitosan structure within interlamellar space confirmed X-ray powder diffraction. high-resolution transmission electron microscopy layered nanocomposites characteristic well presence small spherical cobalt containing nanoformations (confirmed by energy dispersive spectroscopy) dispersed structure. existance CoII CoIII oxidation state proven photoelectron spectroscopy. Co/cCh-S-500 stable efficient after 5 consecutive cycles. This work showed that nanocomposite Co-catalysts, based biowaste-derived carbon, activators exhibited very promising water pollutants.
